Danielle Russell is desperate. Her journalism career is on the line, and she’s running out of chances. So when she lands a rare interview with rock legend Asher Graves, it feels like a miracle. But the interview comes with a catch: she has to meet him at his crumbling Louisiana mansion.

The house is unlike anything Danielle has ever seen or imagined. The walls seem to breathe, shadows twist into shapes that shouldn’t exist, and something lurking in the darkness feels hungry.

As she digs into Asher’s family’s disturbing past, Danielle realizes she’s stepped into a nightmare she might never wake up from. The dead whisper secrets, reality bends, and the house won’t let her leave. To survive, she’ll have to confront her own darkest secrets and a force that’s been waiting for her all along.

From the best-selling author of The Coil and Yuletide Invasion comes a pulse-pounding thriller where nothing is as it seems, and every second will leave you questioning what’s real.

A gnarly text of imaginative horrors told in a poetic visceral way that lends itself to abstraction. It's got some mind bending stiff but maintains a narrative and thematic thread. The imagery is detailed and far out. I appreciated that the author includes an Afterward with some brief comments about themes and motives which I found helped me get more out of the book in retrospect (it might even be worth hearing first despite some spoilers). Cheryl May narrates well fearlessly expounding on the sometimes splatterpunk level weirdness and with such a relatable down to earth voice. I were to be critical the biggest peeve was an occasionally repeated metaphor of coopery tastes or jacking off as an statement of the sacdonic. Overall I loved the weirdness, the detail, and rhe clever journey in the text. The content was creatively delivered and while it seems gorey at times it's artfully constructed to a point it never seems schlocky. I'll be looking for more from J.C. Moore.
