In 1860, Hannah True is without an income when the man she almost married ten years before, Paul Simmons, makes a new proposal, one that pulls her into the controversial world of Spiritualism sweeping America.

As attorney for the Spirit Seekers, Paul convinces Hannah to take a job as pamphlet writer for the group and move to their rural commune, which would allow the nieces she left behind to live with her.

Detectives Vance Hollandar and Victoria Nelson caution Hannah against the arrangement, warning her that while on the surface the members seem devoted to harmonious living, the number of “accidental” deaths that have taken place since the group’s founding says otherwise.

Undeterred by their advice, Hannah moves to the colony where she meets a young girl with amnesia. Making it her mission to find out what caused the memory loss, Hannah digs deep into the girl’s past and is stunned by the chilling atrocities greed has driven certain members to.

Then the colony’s founder takes a romantic interest in Hannah’s beloved Aunt Gertrude, and the danger deepens, leading Hannah to join forces with Vance and Victoria to prevent the next murder.

Decent story, lousy narration
