Her parents were killed when the Germans invaded France, leaving her all alone to care for a sickly aristocrat. As she grew into young womanhood, she found purpose in helping the French Resistance. It was a good story, the narrator was great with accents (and she could sing as well!) and I highly recommend this book!

I generally don't like these kinds of stories because is shines a light on how ugly people can be. Sometimes it's too much and when I read I want hearts and kisses rather than hate and reality. I loved this story , Calvin and Veronique. I wanted more, I wanted to hear about when the mistress passed away and their lives along the way to those eight children. Great story, narration and love.

I would have loved two narrators, male and female voices for the characters. Would have also liked to hear a little more about their story once they were able to be with one another in peace. Instead of just hearing about how everyone else either accepted or didn't accept her.
