Chapter 1

"Happy birthday Honey bunny," Kshama whispered into her daughter's ears, cuddling her just-turned-three-year-old tot.

Jinisha giggled as she tightly clutched the favourite pink bunny she slept with every night.

"Come on get up. Third birthday already! Your friends must be on their way," Kshama said, getting up from the bed and folding the blankets.

Jinisha sleepily walked to the washroom, dragging bunny by his ears.

An hour later, Jinisha was brushed and bathed, and looked very cute in her frilly, baby pink Barbie Princess-themed party gown.

Today, the birthday party was arranged for lunch as, much to her chagrin, Kshama had a flight to catch the same early evening. Luckily, it was a Sunday, so parents could drop off their kids in the afternoon.

Niket, her husband, had spent half of the morning decorating the living room with balloons in the colours of pink, white and silver, and was now out on the errand of getting Barbie Princess photo cake from the bakers, especially baked for Jinisha's small birthday party.

Kshama had tried a lot to get this day free of any work. For her, Jinisha had always been her priority. And though she was good at what she did, she sometimes felt stretched between her duties at work and responsibilities at home.

Niket was a gem of a person and Kshama didn't know what she would do without a husband like him to back her. He encouraged her in everything she did, and he was her greatest moral support. This time too, he had been the one who had helped her strike a golden mean, by arranging the birthday party in the noon, so that Kshama could peacefully organize and attend the party before she could leave for her work conference.

Kshama taught botany to junior college students, and she was representing the research projects from her college at a national conference scheduled at Lucknow.

She was to fly tonight and be back by the day after tomorrow. And even though Kshama had been given the honour of representing her college because she had earned it, she still felt bad leaving Jinisha for two days, one of them being her birthday.

Soon the living room was filled with the laughter, giggles and chatter of small girls as they danced to the bollywood numbers Niket now played on the living room loudspeaker.

As Kshama came outside to look at the little brigade and smile with satisfaction, her eyes met Niket's. He looked at her with so much love and adoration, that she realized she would never have asked for anything more.

Soon the dancers were tired and it was time for the cake cutting.

Kshama looked at the watch. It was nearing 12:30 pm. Her brother Soham, who stayed at a rented place of his own in a nearby locality, hadn't arrived yet.
