Acerca de esta escucha
Blending history and memoir, retired U.S. Marshal Mike Earp - a descendant of the legendary lawman Wyatt Earp - offers an exclusive and fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the most storied law enforcement agency in America, illuminating its vital role in the nation's development for more than two hundred years.
Mike Earp spent his career with the U.S. Marshals Service, reaching the number three position in the organization's hierarchy before he retired. In this fascinating, eye-opening audiobook, written with the service's full cooperation, he shares his experiences and takes us on a fascinating tour of this extraordinary organization - the oldest, the most effective, and the most dangerous branch of American law enforcement, and the least known.
Unlike their counterparts in the police and the FBI, U.S. Marshals aren't responsible for investigating or prosecuting crimes. They pursue and arrest the most dangerous criminal offenders on U.S. soil, an extraordinarily hazardous job often involving gun battles and physical altercations. Earp takes us back to the service's early days, explaining its creation and its role in the border wars that helped make continental expansion possible. He brings to life the gunslingers and gunfights that have made the Marshals legend, and explores the service's role today integrating federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in the hunt for the most notorious criminals - terrorists, drug lords, gun runners.
Setting his own experiences within the long history of the U.S. Marshals service, Earp offers a moving and illuminating tribute to the brave marshals who have dedicated their lives to keeping the nation safe.

Body cams and dashcams have fundamentally transformed law enforcement in recent years. These innovations can help prove someone committed a crime, or didn't. Real-life footage has cleared people initially accused of wrongdoing, and in certain instances even implicated officers. But that same type of footage can also be used to clear police falsely accused of misdeeds. From allegations of harassment or bias to false arrests or even criminal conduct, these videos can prove officers did not cross a line as, sometimes, they are alleged to have done.

Fav Uncle US Federal Marshal, book was dead on!
What did you love best about U.S. Marshals?
I consider myself somewhat of a virtuoso, researching The US Marshal Service extensively. My uncle presently a Marshal and appointed by the President once before as one of the 94 US Federal Marshals. But I have not gained knowledge from him personally as the Marshals are very humble, but it was my admiration for his character that inspired my fascination with the service. Stories were so true to life. Situations as serious, yet comical. Very descriptive.
What other book might you compare U.S. Marshals to and why?
Possibly the Raylin Givens series by Elmore Leonard. Although those books are not real-life, he has certainly done his research.
What about John Pruden’s performance did you like?
He narrated so realistically. I would listen for 4 hrs a stretch. He made you feel as if you were watching a movie.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
All of them. The stories were great and the informational facts were true to everything I have ever researched. The general public really has no idea that they actually are " the most effective law enforcement agency in the nation. Likely the most dangerous of jobs and still an extremely low loss of agents, considering the situations they are put in. Ancestors of author Mike Earp, Wyatt-Virgil-Morgan Earp-past Marshals, barely mentioned. Shows the way the US Marshal Service have of being fine behind the scenes. Their priority being to serve and protect the US citizens from the most dangerous felons right here in the United States. Having an especially deep concern for innocent and abused children and the injustice experienced by them.
Any additional comments?
The Marshals have a highly sophisticated network of diverse Intel. And they are very keen to human behaviour. The job is taken very seriously to serve and protect with little recognition and they are fine with that. They don't compete for glory and are extremely efficient. Most agencies are eager to either help, or use their expertise. Their duties are limitless and their arm is long. I have listened to the book 3 times!

Great book, intro needs serious editing
What did you love best about U.S. Marshals?
The book was exactly what I hoped: chock full of war stories from various marshals covering many different aspects of their work.
Any additional comments?
Why not 5 stars...the introduction, prolog, foreword, and so forth, took almost an hour and a half of this audiobook, and they needed substantial editing. There was much duplication in each of these sections, with dry statistics repeated over and over again. To be fair, each of these had a different author, but an editor should have harmonized them.
It's easy to skip over repetitive stuff in a bound book, not so easy in an audio book, when you can't easily glance over pages.
