A young woman has a baby after an uncomplicated pregnancy with normal ultrasounds. A few days later, the infant suddenly becomes ill and is found to have a serious heart defect. After a prolonged hospitalization, the infant finally succumbs to his defects. The young woman, in the process, learns about family dynamics, grieves for her child, sees the anquish of her doctor, and clashes with her mother.
Then the story departs on a astonishing serpentine course of events. Details emerge casting doubt on basic concepts of motherhood. Who was her baby? Why did this happen? How can a normal ultrasound represent a lethal heart defect? The book is a pause-resister with unexpected twists and unthinkable domino effects on a small town family with heart-warming connections.
