In this third volume of the acclaimed Triveni Sangam Series, the narrative comparison of the Aranyakandam Canto of the Ramayana continues. On a scale unattempted thus far, the author examines the three poets of the Ramayana, drawing directly from the texts in the three languages.

The title Aranyakandam, at once, strikes the nature of this Canto. It narrates Rama’s tenure in the Dandaka forest with Sita and Lakshmana, as a distinct combination of happiness and sorrow. Mainly it is a guide map drawn by the gods to lead Rama without any confusion in the unknown land of the forest during the execution of the previously contemplated objective of Lord Vishnu’s mission on earth.

The three poets, Valmiki, Tulasidas and Kamban, have approached the Ramayana in their own distinctive styles in Sanskrit, Avadhi and Tamil. The Triveni Sangam series is the first work of its kind to draw these towering poetic epics together into a single volume.
