Having completed the quest assigned to him by Odin, the Aesir's All-Father, Viking chieftain Erik Olafsson returns in triumph to Kaupangen, Norge. Expecting to celebrate his victory, he is instead summoned by King Thorgrim Easterling. The wealthy, treacherous merchant's son Hrafn Gunnarson has charged Erik with heinous crimes, but Erik claims that Hrafn is the true villain.
To determine which party is guilty, the king orders the litigants to undertake a trial by ordeal. They must recover three scrolls, written by the Norns and hidden by the king's men throughout the kingdom. The parchments are concealed in places of great danger, but, should the rivals survive their perilous test, one of them faces the risk of eternal exile or execution, as the king shall decree.
