Resumen del Editor

Halifax, North Carolina, 1783

Captain Stuart Monroe returns home from the Revolutionary War to find Thornton Hall threatened by a peacetime foe: debt. He knows the location of a treasure amassed to pay for the capture of Benedict Arnold that would restore his manor to its former glory. The catch: It's hidden in the graveyard and coveted by old enemies.

Hettie Fairfax inherited the Sight from her Cherokee ancestors, and her otherworldly visitors warn her, and Stuart, away from the buried treasure. Half-dead from fever, she delivers a message: The treasure is cursed. But will he believe a girl half out of her mind with illness? Even when a very real enemy attempts to poison her?

Stuart soon wants to marry Hettie, but she fears her "odd ways" will blemish his reputation. The spirits have their own agenda, however, and the battle against darkness tests everything the couple holds dear, including their love for each other.

Great narrator and interesting story

I really enjoy Dawson McBride as a narrator. I listened to one of his books before and found it a nice listen. He has a deep and resonant voice that soothed and it helped me enjoy this book.

After the revolutionary war, soldiers returned to their homes and were often facing debt and even destitution. Who, in that predicament, wouldn’t want to find buried treasure? Captain Stuart Monroe knows where he can secure all the treasure he needs to secure the future of his estate and all is going well until a woman finds him and warns him against his plan. He hasn’t seen Hettie Fairfax since she was a young woman but he recognizes her and listens to her ramblings brought on by illness.

There is attraction between Hettie and Stuart and despite her social position, Stuart wants Hettie in his life. She’s hesitant because she has inherited the ‘sight’ and is, frankly, a little eccentric. At first Stuart humors her but eventually he comes to believe in her.

This is a fun story about cursed treasure, and how to find love even when you’re different. I think I liked that part the most – that Hettie found her place in the world despite possessing talents that might have forced her to live apart from her love. With Dawson’s narration it’s a good book.

historical

Love this narrator. Historical romance. Though warned not to set out after cursed treasure, that was seen as more of a challenge than a deterrent for the beloved captain in the story. Which set a perfect tale for the weaving between Hetty and Captain Stewart. I found this story very realistic and believable, and a great page turner. Well written leaving the reader with a sense of time and place. Recommend this book!

Wonderful historical with ghosts

An engaging story of Hetty and her beloved Captain Stewart who has fallen on hard times since he sacrificed all to fight in the Revolutionary war. He’s desperate to clear his debts but Hetty warns not to seek the cursed treasure. The descriptions were perfect, just enough detail to world build and get a sensée of the time and place but not overly flowery. The dialogue was spot on and realistic and true to the time. The narrator had a pleasing voice and I was able to follow the story though I haven’t read the first two. Well done!
