Cat owners worldwide are trying to make good choices in a market where clarity often takes a back seat to profitability. Catt food myths are everywhere—and they can be costly, not just financially, although that’s certainly part of the story. Premium foods, boutique brands, trendy diets, and unnecessary add-ons can drain your bank account faster than you’d think. But more importantly, some of these myths can have a real and lasting impact on your cat’s health. They may lead to nutritional imbalances, obesity, kidney strain, digestive issues, or worse—while giving you a false sense of reassurance.

And unlike dogs, cats are obligate carnivores with particular dietary needs. Their bodies aren’t built for flexibility. They require specific amino acids, vitamins, and nutrients from animal-based sources. Even small, well-intentioned mistakes in feeding—like swapping to a meatless diet or focusing too much on fillers and carbs—can lead to serious problems over time.

To complicate matters, misinformation doesn’t always look like a blatant lie. Often, it’s a half-truth rooted in outdated science, misinterpreted studies, or clever repackaging of facts. Take grain-free food, for instance. It sounds healthy, doesn’t it? Like the gluten-free movement in humans, it implies that grains are inherently evil. But the reality is far more nuanced—and in some cases, going grain-free may do more harm than good.

Then there are the emotional appeals. Advertisers know how much we love our pets. They use words like “gourmet,” “ancestral,” or “holistic” to tug at our hearts and make us feel like we’re doing something special. They show cats hunting in fields or lounging in spotless kitchens. These are designed to evoke emotion, not to inform. And while loving our pets deeply is beautiful, it can make us vulnerable to buying decisions that serve branding more than biology.

Even veterinarians sometimes get caught up in these myths. While many are knowledgeable about animal nutrition, not all receive extensive training in the subject during veterinary school. Some may rely on information provided by food manufacturers or reps. Others may simply repeat common industry talking points without realising they’re outdated. This makes it all the more critical for cat owners to understand what’s going into their pets’ bowls actively.

Let’s also talk about cost. Feeding your cat shouldn’t require a second mortgage. Yet, because of certain myths, many pet owners feel pressured to choose expensive brands with questionable added value. Some spend hundreds of dollars a month chasing the “perfect” food, adding supplements, switching proteins, or trying the latest freeze-dried craze. Ironically, in many cases, a more affordable, balanced, and science-based option would serve their cat just as well—if not better.
