Tis the Season to be Married

A female cook determined to find a job and possibly a husband before Christmas!

Bethany Rogers stirred the black pot of Texas chili and licked her lips in anticipation as the delicious aroma filled the late afternoon air of her father's Fort Worth, Texas ranch. It had been a month now since he had passed away. His heart had given out and his final words to her were, "Charlie," which was his fond nickname for her, "Tis the season to be married. Your papa's not going to be around much longer to take care of you. I want you to find yourself a good man that will love and treat you like you deserve. Give up the silly notion you have of being a cook on a cattle drive and start dressing like a lady so you can catch a husband. That's what your mama would want too.

Bethany had made up her mind to try to get hired for the last cattle drive of the year. She waited across the street in a mercantile until the men in line finally dwindled. It was now or never, and she walked across the street with as much confidence as she could muster to talk to the trail boss. He was looking down at his paperwork and stated, "Yes, sir, how can I help you?"

:"I would like to be the cook on your cattle drive."

"Why you're a girl! Do you have any idea about what you'd be getting yourself in to?"

"As a matter of fact, I know exactly what to expect. I have been on more cattle drives than I can count, and I can guarantee that your cowboys will be happy with their meals."

"That's not what I'm worried about. You're pretty easy on the eyes."

"Just remember, I'll have a spare frying pan nearby at all times and have been known to wield it as a weapon when needed!"

Cute story, horrible with virtual voice.

This was a pretty cute book. It felt like you were on the cattle drive with Charlie. However, the virtual narration really took away from the story. It’s the same tone whether you’re supposed to feel scared, happy, sad, etc. The ha ha ha’s when Charlie laugh was terrible. No more virtually read books for me.
