Murder, lies, deceit, ambition, revenge, justice, and loyalty are a few of the things Las Vegas District Attorney Erroll Whitlock II must endure or overcome after hearing about the shocking murder of his close friend and local television personality, Field Carpenter, mere hours after two men escape from the Private Correctional Institution located on the famous Las Vegas Strip.
As each day passes with the convicts still on the loose, Whitlock discovers that with the police using their resources to find and re-apprehend the escapees, and the mayor and governor both more concerned with the political ramifications, no one seems to be concerned with finding his friends' murderer.
Determined not to let whoever is responsible escape justice, Whitlock embarks on a personal quest by using every resource at his disposal, including enlisting the services of private detective Ray Diamond, but is soon faced with obstacles he never could have imagined when his father, a U.S. Senator, divulges a long-held secret that reveals there is more than meets the eye regarding the PCI and the escape that very powerful people in Washington are determined to keep hidden, "for the good of the country."
With time running short and the fate of everything he loves and holds dear hanging in the balance, Whitlock is faced with the impossible decision of choosing between his family, his country, his personal beliefs, and the truth while being pressured from all sides. How can he choose? What will he ultimately decide? And how will he ever know if he made the right decision when choosing one means all the others will be lost to him forever?
