The sirens blare. The searchlights scan the grounds of Douglass Branch Penitentiary, but brutal serial killer Waylon Prichard is gone. Austin Branch, the namesake of the prison's founder and trained tracker, pursues the killer, but soon discovers an impossible phenomenon that will make his pursuit of Prichard more difficult—and far more dangerous.
And it's not just the killer he has to worry about anymore. What he discovers is far more devastating to the entire world.
Along with his fiancée, Grace Jansen, and with the assistance of Phineas Beckwith, an Englishman from another time, the three follow the killer through a strange portal in the forest to places never before known nor seen by anyone else on earth.
They enter a world of monsters.

I really liked the development of the villain. Though he is a serial killer he is not some kind of super genius, a trope that is very overused these days. He is cunning and evil, but he is not operating on a level far above those pursuing him. This is refreshing.
The time travel though complicated has rules and none of them seem to farfetched. At every point where I thought, “Oh the plot will go in this direction and the characters will this, that or the other thing,”, I was wrong. I really liked that.
My only beef with the book was that In felt the main heroes could have been a bit more developed. I liked them and could relate to them, but I felt they needed to be fleshed out a bit more. This can be done in subsequent books though, so I am not worried about it.
All in all, excellent reading/listening. I downloaded the follow up “Time Killer, Book II: The Hunters & The Prey” to listen to on my long drives, not waiting for my next Audible credit. The only problem is I must stop listening when I arrive at my destination so as not to have nothing to listen to on the way home.
A really good book that does not play on clichés
