Two down-on-their-luck roommates, a cynical realist and a hopeless optimist, win the lottery. The bad news? It's the ChronoHunt Lottery, a televised blood sport for the ultra-rich. Their prize is a "Subsidized Opportunity" to hunt the last dodo in the 17th century—a joke prize with a pathetic payout.

Facing eviction from their grimy apartment, Leo and Finn have no choice but to accept the mission. Armed with faulty, low-budget equipment from a shady time-travel outfitter, they are flung back in time to hunt a creature that's supposed to be an easy target.

But the dodo is not the dim-witted bird history remembers. It's clever, surprisingly resilient, and seems to be protected by the universe itself. After a series of catastrophic and hilarious failures, their simple hunt is crashed by ruthless corporate mercenaries with state-of-the-art gear and a permit that supersedes their own. Stranded and outgunned, the two failures must become the dodo's unlikely guardians. Their new mission: to save the bird, sabotage the professionals, and somehow find a way back to the future without being erased from existence.
