On a list of funniest books. Amusing in some parts, but mostly not. Many long-winded flashbacks and asides that are not funny and took way too long to tell.

Lovely
I am always surprised at how very Victorian this novel is, delightful and sardonic, and replete with long, sentimental passages. The reader did not read the lengthy sub-titles to each chapter. I do not miss them, but if you would, then this is not the performance you want. The full prejudices of the age are on display, but somehow don't seem malicious. If unthinking racist, classist, and sexist attitudes would destroy your enjoyment, then this book won't be fun for you.
