The wind had always been Haven's End's greatest blessing.
For over two centuries, the small coastal town had thrived on the perpetual sea breeze that swept across its weathered docks and salt-stained streets. Local fishermen relied on it to fill their sails. Tourists came from hundreds of miles away just to feel the constant, gentle caress of air that never seemed to still. The wind was woven into the town's identity like threads in a tapestry—mentioned in every brochure, celebrated in festivals, and credited with the unusually long lifespans of its residents.
But on the morning of October 3rd, when Martha Henley stood in her garden with a pair of pruning shears clutched in her white-knuckled fists, screaming accusations at her neighbor's terrier, the wind carried something different.
Something deadly.
Martha had lived in Haven's End for sixty-seven years. She'd raised three children, buried a husband, and never so much as raised her voice at a town council meeting. Yet there she stood, wild-eyed and trembling, convinced that the innocent golden retriever next door was part of an elaborate conspiracy to poison her prize-winning roses.
"I know what you're doing!" she shrieked at the bewildered animal. "I know who sent you!"
The wind shifted direction for exactly four minutes and thirty-seven seconds.
When it returned to its normal pattern, Martha blinked in confusion, the shears falling from her hands as she stared at the destruction she'd wrought in her own garden—rose bushes hacked to pieces, their petals scattered like drops of blood across the morning frost.
She had no memory of what she'd done.
But someone had been watching. Someone had been counting. Someone had been waiting for the wind to change.
