In 2018 London, the newly divorced Zaleekah, a hydrologist, moves into a houseboat on the Thames to escape her husband. Orphaned and raised by her wealthy uncle, Zaleekah had made the decision to take her own life in one month, until a curious book about her homeland changes everything.

Best read of the year

The research that the author put in to this book helps to create rich and believable contexts across time and locations, right to the present day concerns with climate change and water pollution. This novelist manages to connect head and heart, not valuing one over the other but bringing them closer together as a complementary pair, connected by a drop of water.

Interesting characters

Everyone was sad and depressed. No one had a satisfying end to their stories—just more suffering

So many historical facts woven together in a masterful narrative.

Wonderfully researched with lovely prose, I will recommend to friends and listen again. Stellar book!
