Resumen del Editor

Press agent Jake Justus doesn’t care if all of Chicago drops dead. He’s just tied the knot with debutante Helene Brand, and a Bermuda honeymoon is only three in-flight martinis away. But the shooting death of a man in broad daylight, on the busiest shopping day of the year, with plenty of witnesses, is particularly ill-timed. Jake’s pal, attorney John J. Malone, agrees. Only a day before, wedding guest Mona McClane, notorious jet-setter and tipsy big-game hunter, bet the two men she could bag an innocent stranger and they’d never be able to prove a thing.

Then Malone discovers that the victim wasn’t so innocent. Any number of people wanted him dead. And if Mona is only one of them, Malone’s wagering there’s much more to this murder than just the thrill of getting away with it.

Delightful Series

I love this series. The stories are witty and fast paced. The narrator does a wonderful job. Great fun!

Great Listen

I love this series, but admit I had a little trouble following this one. I listened to it twice, but had a little trouble keeping track of all but the main 3 characters. Probably me. Could be a wine issue. Lol!

Murder is Serious. And Funny.

In a murder mystery, there’s a delicate balancing act. The author must maintain interest, even entertain, while keeping in mind that something unpleasant has happened to a human life. And we listeners, while we “do mysteries” for the sake of “the game”, like to think we maintain some decent decorum while we do them.

And we do. Unless, of course, the author in question is Craig Rice. Then the pace of the one-liners and come backs, the clues, and the cocktails, is as brisk and dizzying as Helene Justus behind the wheel of her car on Michigan Avenue. I’ve compared other Rice books to the classic Cary Grant / Rosalind Russell screwball comedy "His Girl Friday" (that, disconcertingly, revolves around the pending execution of a convict) and that comparison is just as apt here.

I must be getting used to Johnny Heller’s pacing, too. Usually, I need to slow him down to around x.95, But here I just sailed through, enjoying every minute of his splendid performance.
