Better if 1/3 shorter

I enjoyed it for most part, altho I increased speed to 1.1 to get thru it. I also resorted to listening to first & last few min of last chapters. Great story, but too long

An eye opening history

The history of the deciphering of hieroglyphics and the Rosetta Stone. A story of far greater complexity than the usual school book explanation. Vignettes about historical events leading to the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, The collection of ancient papyri, and the men whose obsession lead to its decoding.

Loved it

Great topic. Real Indiana Jones research and discovery. Makes you want to take classes in Egyptology

Good book awful reading

The book is very good, lots of interesting information. Where do the accents come from ? The reader is imagining what people sounded like ? He even mispronounces Rosetta Stone.

Interesting subject

I found this an illuminating and informative book, well written. I liked the pace of the narrative, too.

Wish I’d read this in high school. It would have pointed me in a totally different direction.

Great Story

Really enjoyed the story. The author takes pains to bring the historical characters to life, particularly Jean-François Champollion.

Wonderfully written, very engaging.

Mr. Dolnick has quickly become a favorite author, for his encompassing narratives, and well rounded scenes of 'what else was going on' in the world, and why we are at 'this point', ties into 'that' point. Narration is flawless and kept the story very interesting.

Compelling story of discovery

Dolnick tells a good story and does a fine job describing the challenges faced by Young and Champollion. The story is engaging and exciting.

Hieroglyphs For The People

This is the book written by everyone’s favorite professor…the one who makes history come alive with true stories told with wit, humor, and skill. You will want to read everything this author has ever written if you love the language, love history, and look around for more.
