"Darkness is thicker than blood."

The Day Star hangs high above the realm, shining down a violet light upon all the land day and night. Those born under it, when the star shines at its brightest, are cursed with an affliction known as the Shadow Sight.

It calls to them from the reaches of the cosmos.

It speaks to them.

It watches them.

It allows them to perceive the unfathomable creatures of the Void.

In the city of Emberwatch, a group of people have gathered, all brought together by their own past traumas and their shared affliction of the Shadow Sight, to stop these creatures. The Order of the Blood has tasked themselves with protecting the citizens of the great "City of the Eternal Flame."

But who will protect them from what hides the darkness?

And who will protect them from themselves?

I wanted to like this book, but found I struggled to wrap my head around the world, connect with the characters, or understand their motivations. Despite all the action, I didn't feel like the plot had any direction until literally the last few sentences of the Epilogue. Despite these weaknesses, I found the performance enjoyable enough to keep me going when I likely would have left a print copy DNF. Each character had a distinct and recognizable voice without being cartoonish and the pacing and emphasis felt just right. Unfortunately there were some editing errors that made the listening experience less enjoyable--some lines were repeated, and often the silences between paragraphs or even chapter breaks were cut so short it undermined the narrator's pacing. I don't think I'll be rushing to continue reading this series, but I will keep an eye out for future books read by this narrator.

Solid performance salvaged a hard-to-like story
