John 3:16 is perhaps the best known verse in the entire Bible. In this short book, the author focuses on the word "world" in the verse which is the focus of debate between Arminians who believe the world referred to meaning everyone without exception and Calvinists who tend to view the world as meaning everyone without distinction. The author takes a Calvinist viewpoint and believes that the "world" of John 3:16 is a general, indefinite term meaning "sinners from all the nations," while also maintaining that this "world" consists only of those who are saved, here designated "everyone who believes" and elsewhere designated God's elect. In the book, the author discusses the problems with the Arminian viewpoint and the strengths of the Calvinist view. The book is enhanced by a large number of relevant Scripture verses and references and by quotations from Calvinist thinkers from John Calvin and John Knox through to the present day. The author is from Glasgow, Scotland and writes out of the Scottish Presbyterian and Reformed traditions in which he has been steeped for over thirty years as a Christian and teacher of Christian doctrines.
