Shay Bastable is the woman in the middle. She is part of the sandwich generation: caring for her parents and her children, supporting her husband Bruce, holding them all together and caring for them as best she can.

Then the arrival of a large orange skip on her mother’s estate sets in motion a cataclysmic series of events which leads to the collapse of Shay’s world. She is forced to put herself first for a change.

But in order to move forward with her present, Shay needs to make sense of her past. And so she returns to the little village she grew up in to uncover the truth about what happened to her when she was younger. And in doing so, she discovers that sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to find the only way is up.

Good listen,

I’m like Milly Johnson’s books, listened to most of them, always like tea time and catch up with friends. They are a relatively easy read and usually just the right amount of uplifting - someone changing their lives after coming out of a crisis/bad situation.

The beginning of this book was a bit on the long side for me. The build-up to Shay finally (!) breaking out of her current life was almost unbearable at times - so many people treating her badly. The trip of her uncovering the past was a good element.

Overall an enjoyable read, just not my favorite.

Another Win for Milly Johnson

I love the depth of the characters Milly creates. The story was multi-faceted and lovely. Great book and a wonderful listen.

Lovely

I am in my 40s, have a masters degree, and I don’t own a cat. I love these Milly Johnson books and I love the reader. It’s like hanging out with old friends. I love Milly’s turn of phrase, I love the friendships she is able to illustrate, and I loved this book. Yes, they are somewhat predictable, but I don’t care. The stories are interesting and have depth. I would love to see a Milly Johnson movie.

Milly Johnson Never Disappoints.

Love all of Milly Johnsons books. I re-read them, re-listen to them, and enjoy all of them so, so much. As well, she always has the same narrator, Colleen Pendergast, perform the narration, and she's wonderful. It is like hearing an old friend speak. I am always so happy when I find another of Milly's books that has made it to the American side of Audible. Her stories cover touchy and tough subjects and make me laugh and cry. Well done Ms. Johnson, again!
