He was still a young man, but he'd used that handful of years effectively, building a bad reputation that spanned the West, his villainy taking different forms everywhere it took roost. Denver knew him as the Doctor; Texans called him Montana; and folks in Idaho called him Texas. On account of his youth, most everywhere else called him the Lonesome Kid.

But when he finally gets arrested for vagrancy, he tells the sheriff his name is Alfred Lamb. Will that identity stick when he tries to help a rancher battle off a pack of cattle rustlers?

With a lengthy career in pulps, comics, and early cinema, and with over 200 full-length Western novels to his credit, including Destry Rides Again and Montana Rides and the iconic Dr. Kildare series, Max Brand's action-filled stories of adventure and heroism in the American West continue to entertain audiences throughout the world.

Good listen, enjoyed it even though you know where it’s going to end up at the end. Just takes you back in time. Good narration

Good Max storyline

This story was long with lots of twists and turns. Jack Garrett is my favorite male narrator and he once again did an excellent job portraying the various characters. This story isn’t just about a black stallion but about a “kid” with many aliases trying to find out about his deceased brother.

Multiple Identities

Alfred Percy Lamb was the handle he gave the sheriff. By the time he left the sheriff’s office, he had made a deal to go to work for Colonel Loring. Lamb’s type of work was not punching cattle or riding herd but slinging lead with either of his Colts. The Loring ranch was in financial trouble, losing cattle to the Montague ranch at an alarming rate. Romeo and Juliet, Montagues and Caplets, any connection? Monty, the grandfather, and grandson Jimmy were owners of the Montague ranch. Lamb signed on with Loring to keep the Montagues at bay. The story continues on this path. It appears that Lamb, or The Kid, had other motives for his presence in this feud but it’ll be a while before you figure that out. The cowboy verbiage, idioms, and descriptions were outstanding. I was truly amazed and impressed. It was like listening to poetry. This is one of the finest westerns I’ve listened to in many years. Reading through the Louis L’Amour novels may be the only competition.

Tigers could cut their teeth on you, Kid!

Pace may have been a bit slow but kept my interest. Story line was predictable yet felt good.

Well worth listening
