Resumen del Editor

When Miami homicide detective Hoke Moseley receives an unexplained order to let his beard grow, he doesn't think much about it. He has too much going on at home, especially with a man he helped convict 10 years before moving in across the street. Hoke immediately assumes the worst, and considering he has his former partner, her newborn, and his two teenage daughters living with him, he doesn't like the situation one bit. It doesn't help matters when he is suddenly assigned to work undercover, miles away, outside of his jurisdiction and without his badge, his gun, or his teeth. Soon he is impersonating a drifter and trying to infiltrate a farm operation suspected of murdering migrant workers. But when he gets there for his job interview, the last thing he is offered is work.

In this final installment of the highly acclaimed Hoke Moseley novels, Charles Willeford's brilliance and expertise show on every page. Funny, thrilling, and disturbing in equal parts, The Way We Die Now is a triumphant finish to one of the most original detective series of all time.

So sad this is over

This story requires a followup, but the author has passed away, and unless James Patterson picks it up, there won't be any more. It's been quite good all along, and I'm sad to see it end like this.

WILLEFORD WAS A QUIET GENIUS

I've had this book in paperback for decades, and must have re-read it literally a hundred + times. Imagine my delight when I found all of Willeford's Hoke Mosley books on Audible, especially when they were free to borrow with Prime! Willeford's eminently readable writing speaks for itself; there are no "cop novel cliches" here. In my opinion, this writer is as good or better than Hemingway. It's a shame he's not more widely known; also regrettable is that Mr. Willeford passed away just as the Hoke Mosley character was taking off. The only thing I'd give less than Five Full Stars here is the narration, which isn't bad, only less than what it might have been in comparison to the story itself.

Original story

It was good. My only criticisms are these. It is a little try hard at being unpredictable, and I didn't like how it ended.

Sergeant Hoke Mosely Bk 4

This was another great Hoke Mosely story, sadly there will not be a book 5 as Charles Willeford passed away shortly after this book was released. IMO this was one of the best Hoke stories after Miami Blues...I have read several of Mr. Willeford's books and I think he was a great writer. I also think he does not get a lot of the respect he deserves as a writer and a veteran. Stephen Bowlby does a fine job of narrating all the Hoke Stories.

The way we die now

I love this author! This is the second book in this series that I have read, and it won't be the last.

Bitter sweet

I loved this book. The fourth in the Hoke Moseley series and it seems to me that Charles Willeford was just getting warmed up with Hoke. I would have loved to see how Hoke did in his new job (no spoilers). Sadly Willeford died soon after and we'll never know.

Super Hero Without Super Powers

This is a first experience with Charles Willeford and I enjoyed it very much. The story does nor fit between the lines nor do the characters. Definitely not predictable. The challenge appears to be between morality and legality, with judgement thrown in for a measure.

The edgiest one.

This one is a good mix of grit and character. Hoke is a rough and tumble guy, but he has some conservative points of view. Williford certainly used him to speak his mind how things are really perceived by the public. Nothings better than the 80s in Miami and it shines in this book. Great stuff.

Will appeal to whiny white men

I stuck it out longer than I should have. I gave him the benefit of the doubt but but the time he whined about affirmative action keeping him out of a promotion I realised there was no satire or tongue-in-cheek. Just another bitter author who believes white men can’t get a fair shake. Gross.

Last in series but best

Well I’ve gone through all 4 books in the series and to be honest I’m not a huge fan but I have to say that I liked this fourth book better than the rest. I think I’m just not crazy about the stories or the main character. I don’t think this writer is a bad writer because I’ve liked some of what he has written however I’ve seen another review where they compare him to Hemingway. I’m sorry but that’s a joke.
