I awoke dead. It was a real bummer. Being covered in blood and having fangs was the icing on an already terrible day.
Things go from bad to worse when I get a summons to attend the vampire king’s court, where I get my marching orders. I’m given one lousy week to get my affairs in order, and then I’m to present myself to the conclave to commence my hundred years of indentured servitude, where I get to learn Vampire 101.
The thing is, I have an eidetic memory and I’m a fast learner. It’s not going to take me a hundred years to grasp this stuff. And I have plans–mediocre ones, but they’re mine. One hundred years of servitude isn’t going to fit the bill.
I need to make my escape now, before they sink their teeth into me (again). The only problem is they’ve sent the vampire that turned me to keep a sharp eye on me, and he keeps looking at me like I’m a fine glass of merlot. Escape isn’t going to be easy.
My name may be Bunny, but they’re going to learn there’s nothing fluffy about me....

As she is coming to terms with all of this, she is summoned before the Vampire Court, and it is here that she learns that she must go the Conclave where all newly turned vampires must stay for a hundred years. This is so they aren’t tempted to feed on Humans.
But Bunny doesn’t want to be locked away in some Conclave for hundred years. The King gives her seven days to get her affairs in order, and puts Franklin in charge of making sure that she doesn’t step out of line during that time. And it is here that we see Franklins true nature. Franklin is a violent, abusive vampire who needs a good staking, and he is now in control of Bunny’s future.
Bunny has an eidetic memory (once she see’s something, she doesn’t forget it), and so is quick to learn things. One of the vampires who is with Franklin, takes pity on Bunny, and offers her an out, a job in a supernatural village in Alaska.
The problem is, can she escape from the watchful eyes of the Vampire Court or is she going to spend the next hundred years in servitude to Franklin?
This is a really fun urban fantasy novella that introduces us to Bunny Barrington, and her German Shepherd Fluffy. We get introduced to the Vampire Court and the world that Bunny lives in, with some outstanding world building.
There is some wonderful character work in this book, Bunny’s character is brilliant as the young woman who has her entire life turned upside down, and rather than falling to pieces, she shows true grit in the face of a frightening vampire.
Whilst her name is Bunny, when under pressure, there is nothing soft and fluffy about her.
With a great combination of mystery and supernatural, one in which the vampires actually burn in the sunlight, all wrapped up in some thrilling and gripping story-telling, this is urban fantasy that should not be missed.
Alyse Gibbs has the voice of an angel, and is easily one of the most delightful female narrators to listen to. I could happily listen to her non-stop. She has a very clear and concise voice, and does a wonderful job with creating both male and female voices. She has a great range of voices to, so that you can clearly tell who is speaking, with distinct male and female characters.
On top of this, she not only narrates, but does a wonderful job of voice acting, adding emotion to each of her characters, bringing them to life, so we know how they are feeling as she tells the story, be it happy, sad, angry, elated, or a good dose of sarcasm from Jinx.
Alyse Gibbs is brilliant and adds something special to these stories, and it is absolutely worth listening to them rather than just reading them, as she really brings Heathers characters to life with that beautiful voice of hers.
