Tolkien scholarship at its finest

I have been waiting for *years* for this book to finally come out, and I am happy to say that it did not disappoint. Drout is a phenomenal scholar, and it is on full display in this work. Also, I didn’t realize until I saw that he was the narrator, that I had simply been assuming he would be. It made the experience that much more pleasurable.

Expansive, Challenging, and Deeply Human

My mother read me Lord of the Rings for the first time when I was 9 years old. To this day, it remains one of my most treasured experiences of her and of this life. But I can’t say I truly understood why. After reading this book, I have an inkling. And for that, and all the other beautiful insights, I am deeply grateful. Thank you.
