Major Clanger is the father of the family, forever inventing all kinds of curious contraptions. Mother Clanger tends to their home with steady kindness and a comforting nature. Small Clanger, their adventurous son, is eager to explore and make marvellous discoveries, though his curiosity sometimes leads him into mischief. Tiny Clanger, the youngest, has a generous spirit and embraces everyone she meets with open arms.
Alongside the Clangers live their friends: the Soup Dragon and her playful Baby Dragon, who live deep underground and provide the Clangers with delicious green soup; the Iron Chicken, the Music Trees, the Froglets, and the gentle Hoots.
Fishing on his boat in space, Major Clanger oddly catches a top hat. Inside the hat are three Froglets. These curious little orange aliens create quite a disturbance. When the Clangers try to catch them, the Froglets are unwell. The Soup Dragon graciously gives them a special healing pudding to be bright and chipper once again. Major Clanger goes to fetch more but instead finds more Froglets. After reuniting with their friends, the odd little Froglets go back home.
