Reseñas editoriales

At the time of Michael Thompson's talk in 2007, the psychologist and author had been coming to the 92nd Street Y for nearly a decade to educate audiences and run community workshops. He also grew up in the same Upper East Side neighborhood that has hosted the Y since 1874.

Thompson has written nine books to date, including the best-selling Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Lives of Boys. He is personable and informative while explaining why American boys tend to underachieve. He naturally engages with a live audience as well as with a television camera, a quality which has earned him appearances on numerous national television programs including The Oprah Winfrey Show and 60 Minutes.

Resumen del Editor

Are boys today failing in school because they are lazy, unmotivated, and obsessed with video games? Or are our schools failing to adequately serve male students? Michael Thompson discusses the discrepancy between the performance of female and male students in our schools, and offers possible explanations for the gender gap.

There is a crisis among young men!

This author is 100% correct. Schools have become anti-male institutions that pipeline boys to the streets, to prisons, and to drugs. For 20 years. I work with young boys who were recruited by street gangs in New York City. I l worked in cooperation with several Queens high schools and worked very hard to get boys back into school. However, I often met teachers who didn’t want to be inconvenienced with teaching, energetic boys.
