To fortify himself for an afternoon of operating his taxi, Brady stops at a vending kiosk for a bottle of City Services Sparkling Red, a wine of seriously dubious vintage. As he passes an ice cream kiosk, he is startled to see a girl that is obviously the twin of Ferret, an acquaintance. The twin, along with several other girls, is being closely monitored by beefy matrons in PanNeural uniforms. PanNeural is the mega corporation dominating the brain enhancement industry, and as Brady well knows, does not tolerate interference in their affairs. After lengthy self-deliberation (and a liter of Sparkling Red) he decides to tell Ferret she has a twin. When she hears the news, she goes a little off the rails and demands that they find her, which causes a melee with the matrons and sets off a chain of events that lead to a confrontation with the upper echelons of City Services and PanNeural. Out gunned, Brady enlists the help of Sleep, a dangerous, predatory child of the streets, and engages in good old fashion blackmail in a desperate attempt to win the day for Ferret and keep himself out of trouble, both of which are unlikely.
