Acerca de esta escucha

Actor Michael Gandolfini, star of The Many Saints of Newark, brings Hemingway’s masterwork to life with an original and captivating performance in this brand-new audiobook edition of The Sun Also Rises.

In his unforgettable first novel, Hemingway artfully illuminates the plight of the Lost Generation, weaving a poignant tale of love and loss in the aftermath of World War I. The story follows two expatriates living in Paris in the 1920s: Jake Barnes, an American war veteran and journalist, and Lady Brett Ashley, an independent Englishwoman exploring the opportunities afforded by a new era of liberated women and sexual freedom. Impotent due to an injury suffered during the war, Jake must navigate his hopeless love for Brett in a changed world of waning morality.

From Parisian society’s vibrant nightlife to the ruthless bullfighting rings of Spain, The Sun Also Rises takes listeners on a powerful journey through mass disillusionment, moral bankruptcy, and elusive could-have-beens. All the while, we see both the brokenness and resilience of a generation scarred physically and emotionally by the horrors of war.

It’s always worth the time it takes to hear this timeless story again. Yes, isn’t it pretty to think so?

Hemingway gem

This was one of the best presentations I've experienced in the Audible platform.

The narration was sublime - and made even a classic read such a this - ever more compelling!

A few good passages describe bullfighting. Otherwise, the dialogue almost becomes a parody of Hemingway's style. The listener yearns for an occasional compound or complex sentence. It is painfully dull in story and character. One sees why Gertrude Stein called these diffident folks "the Lost Generation."
One feels like picking up a book by Salinger or Henry James when you are done.
The reader sounds properly uninspired.
Hemingway has better work despite this being considered by some to be his masterwork.

Story is poignant but characters are abominable for the most part. Great description of scenery and character

Distracting narration with American accented French and Spanish

I've read this book before years ago and am 're-reading' the classics via Audible. The story is just as great as I remember it but this version has the worst narration I've heard on any audiobook. The speaker uses crazy accents and exaggerated speaking styles for the characters to the point of parody--it's like listening to a Simpson's reading of the Sun Also Rises. I thought maybe Audible was allowing the general public to upload their own readings or something as it sounds like a 20 year old mimicking French and English accents and trying the craziest different voices to sound different for each character. I haven't listened to other versions of the book with different narrators on Audible but I think I will, just to do justice to this great story.

Great Story, Terrible Narration

This is an excellent audiobook performance of my favorite work by Hemingway. If one knows nothing about this particular work, one may wish to study a description of it. It is about style as much as about the story. It is definitely not an action novel. It is clearly written and well narrated and as such makes an excellent audiobook. Thank You…

Still My Favorite Hemingway Work

I greatly disliked the narrator, but it was free, so I got through it. I probably should have read it myself instead.

poor narration

I found the characters to be on the shallow side of humanity and thus, for me, the story falls short of the author’s fame.

Disappointed

I love this book, but the narrator does horrible voice impressions that sound bad and aren’t consistent.

Poor Reading, Good Novel
