Theo Dalton is six years old when his hands are irreparably damaged in a horrific car accident that takes his mother's life. Told from Theo's perspective some 50 years later, it is through his work as a therapist with a broken woman that he musters the courage to relive the summer that haunts him.

The Substance of All Things is the gripping, heart-wrenching, and often humorous tale of mentors and mothers and fathers, love and redemption, prophets and charlatans, miracles and faith.

Relatable, reachable, familiar

The adjectives! So many. So Everything described in a perfect three word phrase. The fog, the crowds, the details of the accidents, her appearance, the cow, everyone’s eyes, how sadness feels, the sounds, Lily. Frank. Henry. Not too much. Just enough adjectives. A word artist using a - delicate, fine-haired brush - creating - colorful, painted phrases - Like that. Like those. . Just right. Just enough to get me there - into your fictional world - where it all feels familiar and relatable.

Fantastic!

I'll be honest, I had some reservations about reading this "recommended for me" book, it seemed like an odd story. I cannot express how much I loved it. It's so well done that I laughed out loud throughout the book. It even brought me to tears. So well written, so well narrated - fantastic job!

Excellent story with vibrant characters

This book mesmerized me in print form and heading the author read it to me through audio was a delight. The characters and scenes come to life with rich descriptions and the double-pronged story gives you twice the interest.

i am never shocked as Sam brings another triumph.

sam reaches beyond socioeconomic and, religious persecution in Oklahoman of its time. only to grow beyond what he coukd dream.

Rich and Real, but Heavy

Touches on a lot of subjects having to do with trauma and loss, but such a human story.
