Resumen del Editor

Finley Jayne knows she's not "normal". Normal girls don't lose time, or have something inside them that makes them capable of remarkably violent things. Her behavior has already cost her one job, so when she's offered the lofty position of companion to Phoebe, a debutante recently engaged to Lord Vincent, she accepts, despite having no experience. Lord Vincent is a man of science with his automatons and inventions, but Finley is suspicious of his motives where Phoebe is concerned. She will do anything to protect her new friend, but what she discovers is even more monstrous than anything she could have imagined.

An exclusive prequel to The Steampunk Chronicles.

Finley Jayne

I loved every thing about the book except the ending. I wanted it to go on and on with no ending. I have listened to it over fifty time and own all the books.

Clearly a prequel

The narration was excellent and overall this was an enjoyable listen. It was clearly a prequel as the last chapter felt less like a conclusion and more like a nod to the rest of the story. Don’t misunderstand me, the story was still interesting enough, it just was not written as a stand alone book. The plot was a bit predictable and the supporting characters were more than a little flat but it served its purpose of leaving the listener wanting to know more about Finley Jayne.

Enjoyable, but didn't wow me.

Any additional comments?

This is a short story which is a prequel introduction to a series. I found it enjoyable. Finley was an interesting and pretty likeable character, but I found the plot a bit silly. As far as "Steampunk", I'm not sure I would quite classify it as such. There are automatons, etc. But the Victorian atmosphere was very thin. I may read the next (officially first) book in this series, but was not inspired to want to do so right away.

Very enjoyable

Would you listen to The Strange Case of Finley Jayne again? Why?

I would listen to this again in fact the first thing I did when I finished was to see if there were any more books by this author

What does Tavia Gilbert bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

the narrator was easy to listen to. She has a very clear and pleasant voice and does characters very nicely

Too short

A great and gripping story that is way too short to be worth one credit.

A good introduction to the series

What did you like best about The Strange Case of Finley Jayne? What did you like least?

Though the story is short, it's still a fun intro to the series. I read the book awhile back and liked it and decided to listen to it through Audible. The narrator does an atrocious characterization of Finley. She is written as a 16 year old "slip of a girl" and from the cover artwork she's attractive. The narrator gives her a thug-like masculine voice that sounds like a high school play where someone is very poorly imitating a horribly awkward Cockney accent. The other female voices are fine - so why make the main character sound so ridiculous?

If the rest of the books are recorded, I hope the author will have some say in a better narrator.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Narrator has no clue how to do a Cockney accent in a natural manner. Main character's voice was highly irritating.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the series and hope the rest will come to Audible (with a different narrator - Fiona Hardingham would be a wonderful choice!)
