Life in the Appalachian Mountains was hard in the late 1800s. Ivy’s parents, like many others in their community, have arranged for her to marry an older man from town. They need the dowry money he is willing to pay for her to survive the harsh life in the mountains. From their perspective, it's a practical decision in a harsh environment. Of course, Ivy wants no part of this, but she is not good at expressing her wishes. In fact, she’s never been able to speak her mind to her Ma and Pa. She’s a daydreamer and an obedient daughter.
