We are born of the Word, and the Word became flesh. Therefore, we meditate not with mere sentiment, but with Scripture; not with tears alone, but with the living Word made manifest in Jesus Christ. We set our minds on the staggering, shame-laden sacrifice of the Son of God, as the Scriptures testify. For as we behold Him, we are changed, transformed from glory unto glory.

We come to behold!

We walk the Stations of the Cross not to pity Christ nor to drown in sorrow. He rebuked the daughters of Jerusalem when they wept for Him. We walk the Stations of the Cross with deep gratitude to the Triune God for the value He placed on me and you that Jesus Christ died in our place.

The New Testament provides a rich foundation for meditation on Christ’s Passion and death. The Gospels devote significant attention to the events of Christ’s passion and death, from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion and burial. Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, in foretelling His suffering on several occasions (see Matthew 16: 21; Mark 8: 31; Luke 9: 22), invites His disciples to reflect on the meaning of His sacrifice. St. John the Baptist, alluding to Christ’s sacrificial death, identified Him as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1: 29). Our Lord Jesus Christ, You gave us this invitation: “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11: 28-30). Lord Jesus, we have come!
