This is an interesting and creepy supernatural story that takes place in New Orleans! I love that this story touches on so many different and exciting topics; from voodoo, possession/hauntings, ghosts, crimes, and even vampires! It’s an exciting and suspenseful story!!
I enjoyed the dual timelines from the past 1800’s to the present day. Will Izzy and Detective Hebert be able to defeat the evil presence from the past? Will Izzy’s life be forever changed?

This book sucked me in and held my attention the entire read! I listened to the audio version and the narrator did an excellent job!!

The Spiritualist vs. Voodoo

I enjoy stories involving Voodoo and those set in Louisiana since I lived there for 4 years. The book is set in two timelines and the author does a good job melding these two stories together. Izzy is a young woman, working as a Chef in the French Quarter of New Orleans. She soon finds herself being haunted by a supernatural entity that seems to be living in the paneling in her home.

She meets a handsome detective named Jacob Hebert and they team up with Izzy's friend, Haley, and her employer, a Voodoo priestess named Lucy, to try to rid her home of the malevolent ghost. The story of the past and what lead to this occurrence is truly heartbreaking and I would have liked to know more about the couple involved. the Powers. The last part of the book seems to be a lead in to a series involving a team trying to solve supernatural based mysteries. It sounds interesting, but I would have liked more substance about the Powers and how they became so powerful (sorry about the pun!).

I have to say that listening to the audiobook was a disappointment. The audio quality was poor at times, with the voice being muffled/muddled and the volume changing from time to time. And, the mispronunciations drove me crazy! Izzy meets Jacob at Cafe du Monde and they eat beignets every morning. However, the narrator cannot seem to pronounce beignet correctly (or even consistently wrong). The worst was her continuously calling them BAYONETS! Other French names were also botched and often pulled me out of the story. This might not bother a lot of people, but someone should have given her a quick lesson in how to pronounce these words.
