After a devastating British occupation during the American Revolution, Newport pivoted again, becoming a summer colony for the landed aristocracy of the South, then for the newly minted multi-millionaires from the Industrial Revolution, earning this quaint seaside town the nickname, “The Queen of Resorts.” Accompanying these titans of industry and social climbers was a steady stream of hangers on and con artists, looking for any opportunity to fleece these seasonal residents, resulting in an almost endless stream of controversies and scandals. From Mrs. Fish, to the Astors, Vanderbilts to the Kennedys, the City by the Sea has served as a haven for the elite, with a bit of hidden seedy underbelly.
