This story won the grand prize in Desert Exposure magazine's 2012 writing contest. The Christmas Donkey won Desert Exposure's grand prize in 2006. The author, Laura Leveque (also spelled Levesque pronounced lavek) is a freelance writer, landscape painter, and illustrator. She lived in New Mexico for sixteen years and now makes her home on the Olympic Peninsula. She earned a BA from Washington State University and an MA from Central Washington University. Leveque placer gold mined in Alaska, Idaho, Washington, Arizona, and New Mexico, and has treasure hunted in most western states. She also worked as an underground mine tour guide in Colorado and New Mexico. Laura, a.k.a. Jackass Jill, wrote the Donkey Prospector column for Gold Prospectors magazine from 1996 to 2011. She also wrote travel and adventure stories for publications such as Peninsula Post; RV’n Magazine; Gold and Treasure Hunter; Southwest On-line; Harness Goat Society News, Sussex, England; The Brayer, Journal of the American Donkey and Mule Society; Women and Guns; American Survival Guide; and more.
