It’s not often that you come across a document of such religious and historical importance as The Septuagint Genesis – in fact its significance would be hard to overstate.
But what is the Septuagint? Well, its name refers to the “seventy’ (actually 72) translators – six from each tribe of Israel – who translated the Hebrew Scriptures into Greek, the primary language of Jews in Egypt at the time. This, the oldest and arguably most important translation, was the version of The Bible that Jesus himself would have read – and the one from which almost all the New Testament’s writers were quoting. In fact, some 300 passages directly quoted or referenced come from the Septuagint text.
And that precious text rings out true and clear in Christopher Glyn’s reverent yet eminently listenable narration of The Septuagint Genesis. Only a narrator of Christopher’s vast scriptural knowledge and understanding, combined with the experience gained over a lifetime creating inspirational audio and video books, could be worthy of such a project. Most of those books have always been in the Roman Catholic, Greek and other Orthodox Bibles and therefore are accepted as true Scripture by the majority of Christians.

It has been known in the West only since the 1840s, when European travellers acquired manuscripts from monasteries in Ethiopia. Then, in 1949, a complete Hebrew manuscript was found amongst the Dead Sea Scrolls. It is considered canonical by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and one of the pseudepigrapha by Protestant, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches.
