Death and the Holy Grail

Well secrets are secret. There’s plenty of them. What’s the difference between that one and a lie. Sometimes reality cannot tell. So enough doom and gloom, have no idea about the author, as enough time passes one realizes perhaps some at least this truth. And now the facts speaking politely who isn’t interested, even in the lounge of course. Just cant set your watch to even an hour. So realizing time and place and circumstances it’s hard to imagine someone not writing out on something everyone thinks about...some say at least every few seconds or whatever. Great book, unfortunate Russian pronunciations

I'm only about 1/3 through and already love the book. I studied Nabokov in depth in college, and it's a pleasure to return to his life and literature with new insights. That being said, the narrator's incorrect pronunciation of Russian words and names is quite jarring and detracts from the quality of the audiobook. One would think that being able to pronounce Ivan Denisovich and Eugene Onegin would be important enough to the editors to merit coaching for Ms. Boyce. Big miss by the audiobook publisher.

Now Nabokov's writing cane be read and understood from an entirely different perspective. Good listen.

Great book, poor reading

When text is as rich in quotes in Russian, Russian names and places, the reader should know at least basics of Russian phonetics. Ideally — speak Russian. For native Russian-speakers most names and places in the book become unrecognizable: Pnin (Пнин) is pronounced as “Nin.” Luzhin (Лужин) is transformed into “Lucin.” And so it goes. Otherwise great book is butchered by ignorant reading.

difficult to listen to

The book tends to be dry and didactic. As a Russian speaker I find it difficult to tolerate the way the narrator butchered Russian names and places.

Enlightening journey

Though the focus is obviously Nabokov and his family, I found the copious historical context to be fascinating. I would recommend to either a Nabokov fan or history buff.
