It was among the earliest cases Dr. Watson undertook in the company of the great Sherlock Holmes, merest months after their initial meeting described in A Study in Scarlet, as in the winter of 1882 the pair travel north to Edinburgh, after a bizarre letter from the eccentric new landlord of a long-abandoned theater, asks for Holmes’ aid in verifying before the world the validity of hauntings long-rumoured to occur there, and which have become supremely active of late amid the playhouse’s ongoing restoration. Disdainful of the idea of the supernatural, the still little-known Sherlock Holmes agrees to investigate the events, with an eye to debunking any claims of ghosts, yet unforeseen events soon compel the detective to focus a more serious gaze onto a case which he at first undertook with a condescending smirk. Are the sinister happenings within the old theater attributable solely to the sanguine hand of man, or is something else at work, however unwilling Holmes may be to consider that dark possibility?
