The Science of Sound Healing is, unfortunately, rather light on the “science” part of its title. While it offers plenty about mantras, chanting, and sound baths—and makes a case for their benefits—it doesn’t provide much of the rigorous research behind them. As someone who plays singing bowls, gongs, and other instruments, and who regularly practices meditation, I know there’s been a wealth of fascinating science on sound healing in recent years that could have enriched this book.

For instance, opera singer Renée Fleming has spearheaded development of a research toolkit to standardize music-based clinical trials for brain disorders of aging—ensuring rigorous study design and paving the way for future insurance coverage. She has also funded initiatives like the NeuroArts Blueprint and Neuroarts Investigator Awards to support interdisciplinary research.

On another frontier, Mickey Hart, percussionist for the Grateful Dead, has transformed cosmic data—such as light waves and cosmic microwave radiation—into audio compositions. His 2012 album Mysterium Tremendum fused these “cosmic sounds” with traditional percussion, in collaboration with scientists like Nobel laureate George Smoot. In 2021, Hart joined forces with tabla master Zakir Hussain to create Sound Consciousness: Drones for Sonic Bathing, a 10-day audiovisual meditation experience using Hart’s amplified monochord instrument, The Beam.

These kinds of projects represent exactly the kind of science-meets-art exploration I had hoped to find here. The omission of such groundbreaking work left me disappointed, and I wish the book had gone deeper into the research driving the modern understanding of sound’s healing potential.

There’s solid research and it really works. I've been doing OM and crystal bowl sessions with a small speaker on my chest so I feel the vibrations. I definitely feel more relaxed.
