In the 1960s, the era of beehive hairdos and colorful polyester suits was also a time of unrest. People questioned the beliefs that had been passed down for generations. Many joined cults and were led astray.

The story of Chester and Ruby Fallon and their daughter, Bertha, reflected the restlessness of that time. All of them had questions that only God could answer.

Chester and Ruby found solace in the loving arms of God, while Bertha wandered around like the Israelites in the desert for forty years.

Like Jonah, she ran away when she didn’t want to hear God’s voice calling to her.

Bertha went from living in a pristine parsonage where she was expected to be the perfect little preacher’s daughter to a difficult path of insecurities and sadness. She tries to figure out where she fits in. Does her life matter to her parents, who are preoccupied with church meetings, hospital visits, and maintaining a pristine image for the community?

She sees hypocrisy at its worst. Who can she trust? God? Certainly not. Her Daddy? Nope. Her mama? Not so much. What about her friend, Miz Pennington? You’re kidding me. Who then?

Bertha finds herself in trouble often. Her friend, Jesse Turpin, tries to help her, but she turns away from his friendship to walk the forbidden path.

Every time she stands at the crossroads, she runs away. Will she ever stop long enough to hear God’s voice?

He extends mercy and grace to her, trying to woo her out of the shadows of her bad life choices. It’s up to her. What decision will she make?
