Resumen del Editor

The Road to Chidarra is a Christian fiction novel based in an age when men worshiped at the altar of their cruel masters, the gods, and feared the monsters and strange beings who plagued their lands with malice and terror. The cries of the people are heard, and a stranger is sent from afar to guide, protect, and bring peace to the lands. This, however, comes at great cost, for the dark powers do not give in so easily, and the struggle for freedom always and forever shall be paved with blood and sacrifice.

Took me awhile but I really got into it

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The narrator for this book has a great voice, but he does not take breaths between sentences. He must have edited them all out. It took me awhile to get used to this, and interfered with being able to get into the story line itself.

This is a Christian fantasy and is actually several stories woven together. I starts out with The Prophet's quest and relates his adventures as he seeks to sow God's love and His justice among tribes and peoples who do not know God or the Prophet. The characters in each story are very imaginative and colorful. There was lots of action and drama. The stories carried urgency but also hope, and what seemed to start out as a dark and brooding story gained light and grace as it progressed.

Interesting idea but short.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Narrator puts his heart into it but it has quality issues for me (some clipping could be my download but I don't think so).
The book is unusual, it's like a combination of the Lord of the rings and the bible. If the bible with hobbits and fantastical creatures and magic sounds like an interesting combination give it a shot! It does get a little dry at times but for the most part it's got an unusual combination of ideas and keeps it interesting.

Interesting concept, but it didn't work for me.

I really struggled to rate this book, for several reasons that mostly come down to personal taste.

The audiobook narrator was very good. He has a smooth, pleasant narration voice and a good assortment of character voices. He also has good control over tempo and vocal inflections.

Now, honestly, I liked the world the author built and I think the idea behind this story was a good one.

Unfortunately, the style he chose to write it in just didn't work for me.

I understood going into it that this was a Christian fantasy. So I expected Christian sensibilities and perhaps even Christian or Christian-eske religion and mythology.

What I didn't expect, was a book that reads like a parable.

The writing style feels like a cross between a 17th century fairy tale and a book of of the Old Testament Bible.

Not that this is inherently bad, it's just not a style I enjoy.

With that very high level omniscient narration, I really wasn't able to connect with any of the characters.

Further exacerbating the problem is the story's inability to decide if it was present tense or past. It kept switching back and forth. We ended up with lines such as, "David stands and looks, then he said..."

That inconsistency was extremely distracting.

Perhaps it's only that with the different frameworks in place I struggled to follow what was happening in the "now" and what was being told as a past event, but for me the ending seemed rather lackluster.

In the end, if you enjoy the super high level omniscient narration style of parables and old fairy tales, this might be exactly the thing you're looking for.

Not For Me

I’m going to start this review by saying that I enjoyed the narration. It was smooth and easy to listen to, but the story itself had me thinking. I like the creation of the world and the characters in this audiobook, but the switching of tenses distracted me.

There is lots of suspense, and the story itself has some real action-packed moments, but I struggled to keep myself involved. The writing style wasn’t one that I was used to and while others might enjoy it, I found it hard to connect to characters and to scenes because it comes across as an omniscient POV which in itself is interesting if you enjoy that type of style.

Interesting Christian Fantasy

This one was a bit strange for me... It was a bit hard to get into due to the odd mixture of Hobbit like story mixed with a fairly preachy Christian story. I just couldn't get into it. I will say the narration was wonderful, he did a great job with the voices.

Great story

The story and narration kept me on pins and needles. The literary pictures painted by the author and narrator are cristal clear and riveting. I highly recommend The Road to Chidarra.

A Memorable Quest

The narration enhanced both the imagery and suspense of the tale. The dynamic characters and vivid textures of the scenes powerfully propelled the story. The plot was both well conceived and written.

I’m looking forward to the author’s next release, which will hopefully continue this exciting journey.

Christian Fantasy

This was a Christian fantasy story that reminded me of sunday school. There was magic and evil but it was all put right through the power of the Lord. Less allegory than Narnia or Middle Earth, they reminded me at times of Howard's Soloman Kane. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
