The Ring and the Circle

Humanity stretched its reach beyond the familiarity of terra firma, by creating an inhabitable ring encircling the planet. As the population migration to the Ring grew, the strained resources of Earth began to ease, reverting to a healthier and more robust environment. Humans were divided into separate factions. Solid ground and natural gravity appealed to some while others favored the wonders and possibilities associated with life in space. Colonies were established on the moon and neighboring Mars. Large-scale mining operations provided materials for the expansion of the Ring and the people who called it home. Long-range probes and generation starships reached farther into the unknown looking for locations to establish a new presence for our species and perhaps discover life among the stars. An event of unimaginable proportions shocks humanity with the realization we are not alone in the cosmos. Humans have envisioned many scenarios centered around first contact, now reality will cast away speculation leaving no doubt about who we are and exactly where we fit.
