With The Respondent: Exposing the Cartel of Family Law, Hollywood veteran Greg Ellis delivers a gripping, unvarnished first-person account of family breakdown and the social, political, and legal forces that are fueling this national health emergency. It further exposes and condemns a gender bias that presumes that fathers are less effective caregivers.

Family breakdown is the single greatest threat to American society. Every day, more than four thousand children lose a parent because of our archaic and inhumane family-court system. Every day, ten divorced men commit suicide. And now, one in three children in our country are without their father.

The Respondent is Ellis’s personal story about a Hollywood dream razed by internal and external forces. Part memoir, part meditation, and part manifesto, it’s a timely and heartrending portrait of perhaps the most misunderstood aspect of the American legal system. Through its candor and moral strength, The Respondent offers guidance and hope. As such, it’s an indispensable listen for not only parents enduring the grief of child separation, but all interested in learning about the gross overreach and unrelenting brutality of family law.

At this point in time, I think we all know at least one person who has been through the absolute hellscape of the family law system. We know all about the emotional/psychological trauma and financial ruin that results from these situations. I chalked it up to be the tragic result of common human failings as intimate relationships dissolve. The Respondent reveals that the family law system can be an indifferent, incompetent bureaucracy and at worst, a malicious and unaccountable agent of greed and destruction. My jaw dropped to the floor countless times in incredulity as Greg Ellis told his story. Who knew that the presumption of innocence and due process do not apply in family law?! This is not “a cautionary tale.” It is an outrageous and terrifying one. All American adults should be familiar with Greg’s story so that we know what we could be up against should we be unfortunate enough to be thrust into the system. The medical records at the end of the book corroborate his story. Through this book, Greg has displayed his honesty, humility and enormous strength of character. I sincerely hope, in the not so distant future, that his sons come running back to him.

I’m still shocked that this could happen in America.

as a woman who wanted to peaceably divorce, my ex-husband and simply co-parent and take care of our children together. everything that you experienced Mr. Ellis, I am now experiencing with an animal-possessed man who drinks alcohol a lot and I've had people in the community say to me you're getting divorced over alcoholism. I've been in the family cartel law since 2020 and he's still taking me back to court. he's vindictive. he has done everything in his power to flip the script and has been successful with individuals who were our friends, teachers and counselors of my kids. honestly I'm just sitting back and going well. I didn't cause this, I cannot control this, and I cannot change it. is simply and calmly tell the truth. What other people do with that truth is their business. I have a clear conscience. I have four friends who are all female going through the exact same thing in Family Court and all they're doing is fighting for the Integrity, sanity, love of their children.

Rose can be reversed.

This book is hands down fantastic. The writer and narrator has out done himself on telling his own story of family trauma. Ellis has lived and communicated his own horrific story of gender and parential discrimination and parential alianation. Every police officer, attorney, Guardian at Litem, and family law Judge should read this book! In justice such as Gregg Ellis SHOULD never occur in our modern justice system. Please read or listen to this fantastic book.

Fantastic writing and oral presentation

I found the dramatization unnecessary and distracting since the story itself was compelling enough for the desired impact. I do appreciate that the author was vulnerable and occasionally included the fact that his experience could be the same for a woman in his situation, as it was in mine. I also found it shortsighted for the author to address parental alienation in verbiage which portrayed it as a diagnosis when it is not in the DSM. A diagnosis must have a treatment. I really appreciated that the author addressed the point about the no fault divorce state providing a perfect situation for the greedy mental health professionals and attorneys to capitalize on the reasons for the divorce itself.
