For many Libyans, Muammar Gaddafi was a brutal dictator killing and torturing anyone who opposed his views for over four decades in Libya. His authoritarian regime systematically violated human rights and supported global terrorism around the world. The Arab Spring in 2011 led to the end Gaddafi and his corrupt government. President Barack Obama at the time stated, “the shadow of tyranny over Libya has been lifted” while communist dictators around the world praised Gaddafi’s legacy as a martyr. The fall of Gaddafi led to a change in government with a constitution, freedom of religion, basic human rights, an independent judiciary and elected officials. Gaddafi’s tyranny will be judged by his abusive human rights record against dissidents and his exportation of terrorism around the world.
