Post Office Street drops its listeners into the red-light district of Galveston, where crooked cops and down-on-their-luck prostitutes dwell. Yet, in this seedy part of town, Carden paints a picture of hope as his main characters seek to break free from the ruts that their lives have fallen into.

The story opens with a shootout involving a plainclothes police officer named Billy Croft, establishing the dangerous world in which Carden's characters' life. From there, Carden introduces us to a compelling cast: Connie, the house's most sought-after prostitute who dreams of escaping her circumstances; Meg, an aging sex worker struggling with the end of a long-term relationship with a banker; Colby, the Black woman who manages the house while navigating an interracial relationship; and of course Billy Croft, the vice cop whose complex morality becomes increasingly central to the story.

I think that's what I enjoy most about this book, the cast of characters and how Carden wove them into each other's lives.
