Life growing up in the shadows of WWII. Kids born in the '40s grew up fast. They had to. By the time they were five more than 70 million people were killed in the largest world war in the history of man.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Pompey Hollow Book Club to be better than the print version?

Unfortunately, I have not read the printed version of this book. I tend to listen to more books than I read now a days.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Pompey Hollow Book Club?

There so many it is hard to pick a specific moment. I guess the swapping of the sandwich for a quarter. It set the whole tone of the book.

What does Lee Alan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Had I read the book, I would have had my voice in my head. Having Lee Alan read the book I could imagine my grandfather relating tales from his boyhood. Lee added the extra dimension to the story.

Any additional comments?

It is a story about how people are kind and generous to each other.

It is a story about how people work together and accomplish great things.

It is a story that the leaders of our country should read. They could absolutely learn from this work of art.

This should be a required read for everyone!

Fantastic Storytelling and a Hidden Gem for Locals

I’ve lived in this area my entire life—born in Apulia Station in 1962, attended grade school in Tully, and graduated from Fabius High School—and I was absolutely amazed and enamored by all the accurate local references throughout The Pompey Hollow Book Club.

The storytelling is fantastic, but what made it extra special for me was how deeply it connected with my own memories. I knew people who lived on Cardner Road, including one classmate who lived right on the corner of Cardner and Delphi Road—just a tenth of a mile from the falls. My cousin married a Holbrook. My father served on the school board with Marty Bays. My best friend in high school? He was the son of “Minneapolis-Moline” Conway.

I now live about half a mile from the Berwyn Bathtub, which my father and his siblings used and often spoke of fondly. There’s no end to the accuracy and nostalgia packed into this book, and the way Jerome Mark Antil weaves it all into the story is nothing short of masterful.

If you’re from Central New York, or especially if you're from the crown, this book will feel like a walk through your own childhood. But even if you’re not, the story stands tall on its own.

Highly recommended. And Mr. Antil—if you ever return to the area, dinners on me. We’ll go to the Lincklaen House.
