I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell meets Columbo in The Polygraphist by William Geiger.

Told as a fictional memoir from the perspective of a polygraph examiner, The Polygraphist pulls back the curtain on one of the least explored aspects of police work: the polygraph examination.

In a twist on the whodunit genre, The Polygraphist focuses on the art of solving crimes through obtaining confessions. Each chapter is a cat and mouse game where the examiner matches his cynical wit against murderers, rapists, thieves, and con artists. And yet, for all his skill at finding the truth in others, The Polygraphist struggles to find honesty in himself.

As a retired police officer and a new polygrapher, I found this book entertaining and relatable. The author cleverly delivers stories that clearly depict the realities of being a police officer through several decades of change. As a new polygrapher I appreciated hearing his style and manner to obtain admissions and confessions (which isn’t easy, many officers quite frankly do not have this ability). As a 29year law enforcement professional I can also relate to the political challenges and frustrations he experienced. Lastly, he expresses vulnerability with regard to his personal challenges and family dynamics. Thank you for the good “read”.
