The Plainsman – The Wagon Train Scout is the 2nd book in the Plainsman series. Sam Jackson was to wear many hats during his life: freight wagon driver, wagon train scout, Deputy town Marshal, Deputy Sheriff, scout for the 9th and 6th Cavalry, and U.S. Marshal for the Western Division of Texas.
Sam responded to a newspaper ad asking for someone to scout for a wagon train bound for Santa Fe, New Mexico, on the Santa Fe Trail. Sam sent a telegram and surprisingly was hired sight unseen. He traveled from Texas to Independence, Missouri.
During the trip to New Mexico, Sam tangles with hostile Indians and suffers from lack of water while on the Cimarron Cutoff.
He saved a young girl from being molested by two freight wagon drivers.
He is ambushed by Indians and his horse is killed. He survives the encounter and completes his job of getting the pilgrims to Santa Fe.
